South Africa to deport 95 Libyan nationals after court ruling
The Department of Home Affairs has welcomed a recent court decision authorizing the deportation of 95 Libyan nationals who were arrested in White River, Mpumalanga.
Indeed, the group, apprehended last month at what authorities believe to be a military camp, will now be sent back to Libya following the withdrawal of charges against them by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
In response to the court’s ruling, Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber has directed his department to expedite the deportation process, ensuring all legal protocols are followed to carry out the removals efficiently.
Home Affairs officials were present in court to obtain the necessary confirmations from the Magistrate, clearing the way for the deportations to proceed. The department is currently finalizing the logistics required to return the 95 individuals to Libya.
“Deportation was one of the measures we considered in coordination with other law enforcement agencies,” the department stated, emphasizing its readiness to execute the deportations promptly.
Minister Schreiber underscored the government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws, stating, “We will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone who violates the country’s immigration laws. The rule of law is non-negotiable.”
With the court’s decision in hand, South Africa is preparing to send a strong message about the importance of upholding its legal standards and the swift consequences for those who breach them.
