Burkina Faso: Captain Ibrahim Traoré launches in-depth modernization of the judicial system

As Burkina Faso undertakes a reform of its state structures and works to strengthen its national sovereignty, it is carrying out a profound transformation of its institutions. Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, a new milestone was reached with the review, in the Council of Ministers on July 2, 2025, of a draft law reforming the status of the State’s Legal Representative. This measure is part of a broader dynamic of modernizing the judicial system, in line with the vision of the President of Faso: to build a more efficient, more sovereign state that is closer to its people.

Since taking office, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has consistently demonstrated his firm resolve to deeply transform Burkina Faso’s institutions. In the area of justice, this reform marks a structural step forward. It aims to strengthen the autonomy of the State’s Legal Representative, optimize the internal organization of this key structure, and open it up to diverse profiles from civil society, thereby enriching its range of skills.

In practical terms, this reform will allow the State’s Legal Representative to directly defend the state before the Court of Cassation, without the obligation to hire a lawyer. This will make procedures less costly and faster, while ensuring greater responsiveness from the administration. In addition, the institution will now be attached to the Ministry of Justice, ensuring better coordination of public litigation.

Another major advance is the creation of a deputy position and the broadening of recruitment criteria to include holders of a Master’s degree, even outside the legal field. This openness aligns with Captain Traoré’s pan-Africanist vision, based on inclusion, competence, and the development of national potential.

These changes bring hope for the population. A faster, more accessible, and better-organized justice system helps strengthen the rule of law and restore trust between citizens and institutions. By placing the public interest at the heart of government action, Captain Ibrahim Traoré affirms his determination to serve the people of Burkina Faso with rigor and integrity.

Thanks to this ambitious reform, Burkina Faso’s justice system is resolutely advancing towards modernization and efficiency. Through his visionary leadership, Captain Ibrahim Traoré once again demonstrates that he is the architect of a new, sovereign, just, and forward-looking Burkina Faso.
