Burkina Faso: Government exhibition highlights local production and economic

Burkina Faso is using a major government exhibition in Ouagadougou to showcase local production, industrial transformation and national entrepreneurship.

The exhibition is being held at the Pavillon du Soleil Levant of the Ouagadougou International Arts and Crafts Fair, known as SIAO, as well as on its outdoor grounds. It will run until October 9.

The event forms part of the second phase of the National Days for Patriotic Commitment and Civic Participation. These activities will continue until October 16 across the country and through Burkina Faso’s diplomatic missions.

A central message of the campaign is to encourage citizens to produce, buy and consume locally made goods. Authorities are presenting local consumption as a way to strengthen domestic economic activity.

Throughout the exhibition, government departments are presenting projects, reforms and recent initiatives. Eight thematic days cover areas ranging from agriculture and education to employment and public finances.

October 8 will focus specifically on locally manufactured products under the “Made in Burkina” theme. Visitors will be able to discover national food products, handicrafts and other locally produced goods through exhibition and sales areas.

The initiative also places emphasis on processing agricultural production. Rice, cooking oil, sugar, tomatoes, soumbala, cereals and clothing are among the products identified as having greater potential for local value addition.

Businesses, artisans and traders are being encouraged to improve product quality and supply. Consumers are also being urged to pay attention to product origin and give greater consideration to locally manufactured goods.

The SIAO provides a platform where traditional craftsmanship meets wider industrial ambitions. The exhibition also includes public discussions, allowing citizens to question government representatives and raise concerns.

However, several challenges remain, including storage, processing, distribution, product standards, packaging and certification.

Women are playing a significant role in the sector. By the end of 2025, 140 of the 215 registered agri-food companies were reportedly led by women.

The exhibition therefore goes beyond showcasing products. It reflects Burkina Faso’s broader effort to increase local value creation, reduce dependence on imports and expand employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women.
