CAF dispels rumors: No official date set for AFCON 2025 amidst speculation
Amidst growing speculation about the exact date of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, has officially refuted any confirmation regarding the schedule. Despite reports in the press, Mosengo-Omba emphasized that as of now, CAF has not finalized a date for AFCON 2025.
The uncertainty arises from Morocco’s announcement, the host country, during the confirmation of the retention of their coach Walid Regragui after AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
Morocco revealed their intention to hold AFCON 2025 in the summer. However, the lack of an official announcement from CAF has led to various rumors circulating in the media, including a potential date range from July 20 to August 16/17, 2025.
Mosengo-Omba shed light on the complexity of scheduling, stating, «You know, 2025 will mark the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup with 32 teams. We need to know the exact date of the final. Additionally, after this competition, players will need time to rest. Discussions are ongoing. If you hear a date for AFCON 2025, know that it is not official. Even CAF does not know yet when the competition will take place. All we know is that AFCON 2025 will be held in Morocco in 2025. Discussions are ongoing with Morocco, FIFA, including the European Club Association», he mentioned during a visit to Kenya, as reported by AFU.”
