Suspensions rock Equatorial Guinea National Football team After AFCON 2023: Captain Emilio Nsue and Edu Salvador excluded

In a surprising turn of events for the Equatorial Guinea national football team, the football federation of the country has announced the exclusion of two players, including captain Emilio Nsue, in the aftermath of the closure of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite a commendable performance at the AFCON 2023, highlighted by a convincing 4-0 victory over Ivory Coast, the Nzalang Nacional faced elimination by Guinea in the round of 16.

Beyond on-field results, the team encountered significant off-field issues during their time in Côte d’Ivoire.

Emilio Nsue, the top scorer of AFCON 2023 at 34 years old and captain of Inter City in Spain, impressed on the field.

However, he allegedly failed to adhere to established standards off the pitch, leading to serious disciplinary issues.

In an official statement released on Tuesday evening, the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation explained that Nsue had been involved in several episodes of severe indiscipline, both before and after the national team’s participation in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

As a result, his participation in the national team has been suspended indefinitely.

Additionally, Edu Salvador, implicated in an unpleasant incident that involved intervention by the Ivorian police during the AFCON, has also faced consequences.

The federation has announced his exclusion from the national team until further notice.

The incident in Abidjan on January 29th resulted in a significant delay in the team’s return to Equatorial Guinea and caused damage to the reputation and image of the national team and the country.
