West Africa: Bassirou Diomaye Faye to visit Ibrahim Traoré

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to arrive in Ouagadougou on Thursday, May 30, aiming to strengthen diplomatic ties between Senegal and Burkina Faso.

The newly inaugurated President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, will visit Burkina Faso on May 30, 2024, for a working and friendship visit, according to the Burkina Faso Information Agency (AIB).

«This visit aims to bolster the historical and neighborly relations between Senegal and Burkina Faso», the AIB noted.

Discussions between President Faye and his host, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, will focus on Burkina Faso’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the end of January, the AIB reported.

Since taking office, President Faye has expressed his intention to persuade the countries in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to reconsider their decision to leave the West African organization and rejoin it.

To recap, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, all governed by military juntas, decided earlier this year to exit the regional institution, accusing it of abandoning its core principles and aligning with foreign powers.
