Mali takes a major step forward in Sahel Alliance with ratification of AES confederation treaty

Bamako, August 28, 2024Under the leadership of Colonel Assimi Goita, Mali has moved decisively to strengthen its role within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). During the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday, the Malian government approved a set of legislative texts aimed at ratifying the Treaty establishing the Confederation of the AES, which was signed in Niamey on July 6, 2024.

This treaty, born out of the inaugural Summit of the AES Heads of State, solidifies the shared commitment of Sahelian countries to intensify cooperation in the face of security and development challenges across their region.

The Confederation of Sahel States represents a unique union where member countries retain their sovereignty while transferring certain powers to the Confederation, particularly in defense, security, diplomacy, and development.

Member states pledge to work closely together to protect their sovereignty, synchronize their diplomatic efforts, foster economic growth, ensure the free movement of people and goods, and prevent any coercive actions that could harm regional stability or their populations.

To ensure the effective operation of this new entity, the Confederation will be governed by common institutions, including the College of Heads of State, the Confederation Sessions of the Council of Ministers, and the Confederation Sessions of Parliaments.

The presidency of the Confederation will rotate annually among the presidents of the confederated states, with no consecutive renewals permitted.

Mali, serving as the depository of the treaty, underscores its commitment to deepening regional integration.

This move signals a significant advancement toward a more unified approach to collective defense, sustainable development, and the maintenance of peace and stability in the Sahel.
