Colonel Assimi GOÏTA, President of Mali’s Transition, arrives in Beijing for the 9th FOCAC Summit

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, Colonel Assimi GOÏTA, the President of Mali’s transitional government, landed in Beijing, China, to attend the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

This summit, which brings together African and Chinese leaders, serves as a pivotal platform for deepening both bilateral and multilateral ties between China and African nations.

Accompanying President GOÏTA is a high-level delegation, including five key ministers: the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, the Minister of Industry and Trade, and the Minister of Energy and Water.

The composition of this delegation underscores the strategic importance of Mali’s involvement in the summit, where discussions will focus on crucial areas such as economic investment, security, infrastructure development, and industrial cooperation.

President GOÏTA’s presence at the FOCAC summit highlights Mali’s commitment to strengthening its partnerships with China, a major player in Africa’s development.

The discussions in Beijing are expected to yield agreements and initiatives aimed at boosting Mali’s economic growth, enhancing its defense capabilities, and improving its energy and industrial infrastructure.

Held every three years, FOCAC is a vital forum for Sino-African relations, offering African leaders a unique opportunity to align their priorities with those of China, a strategic partner in various sectors.

For Mali, the summit presents a chance to solidify its relationship with China and attract new investments in critical development projects.

Mali’s participation in this event also reflects the transitional government’s emphasis on international cooperation, particularly with partners that can significantly contribute to the country’s economic recovery and sustainable development.
