Premier League Boxing Day: Chelsea Stumbles, Newcastle Thrashes Aston Villa

Boxing Day 2024 delivered surprises and drama in the Premier League. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat against Fulham despite taking an early lead.

Elsewhere, Newcastle dismantled Aston Villa 3-0, while Tottenham continued their poor form with another loss, this time to Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea appeared in control early on when Cole Palmer’s sublime strike in the 16th minute gave the Blues the advantage.

The hosts dominated but failed to extend their lead. Fulham, resilient throughout, struck back late. A well-executed team move saw Callum Wilson equalize in the 82nd minute.

In stoppage time, Fulham completed the comeback as Rodrigo Muniz slotted home from a Sasa Lukic assist, leaving Chelsea four points adrift of Liverpool, who have two games in hand.

Up north, Newcastle showcased their Champions League ambitions by cruising past Aston Villa. Anthony Gordon opened the scoring with a stunning strike just two minutes in.

Villa’s hopes diminished after Jhon Duran was sent off for a reckless challenge. The Magpies capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Alexander Isak doubling the lead in the 59th minute and Joelinton sealing the win with a spectacular late goal.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest edged Tottenham 1-0 with Anthony Elanga’s early strike, West Ham secured a 1-0 victory over Southampton through Jarrod Bowen, and Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared the spoils in a goalless draw.

The Boxing Day action reiterated why the Premier League remains one of the most unpredictable leagues in football.
