Mali: Justice, the foundation of social cohesion and democratic transition according to Army General Assimi Goïta

On Thursday, December 26, 2024, the Supreme Court in Bamako hosted the ceremonial opening of the judicial year under the leadership of General Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition. The event, themed “The Role of Justice in Consolidating Peace and Social Cohesion: The Case of Elections,” highlighted the judiciary’s pivotal role in maintaining national stability.

In his address, President Assimi Goïta emphasized the judiciary’s critical responsibility to act as an impartial arbiter during this transitional period.

He underscored that justice must serve as a cornerstone of social peace, ensuring fair and transparent resolutions to electoral disputes.

His message called for strengthening the integrity and credibility of judicial institutions as Mali navigates its path forward.

The chosen theme reflects the pressing need to rebuild public trust in the judicial system.

In a context where elections often heighten tensions, magistrates are tasked with demonstrating unwavering rigor to safeguard democracy and prevent actions that could undermine social cohesion.

President Goïta also highlighted justice’s essential role in restructuring Mali’s institutions. He urged judicial actors to rise to their mission by standing as a bulwark against division and fostering national reconciliation.

This solemn occasion showcased the Malian authorities’ commitment to positioning justice as a driver of stability and progress.

As the country continues its transition, the reinforcement of the rule of law emerges as a vital prerequisite for a peaceful and united Mali.
