Football/ Premier League: Arsenal edges past Ipswich to keep title hopes alive

Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at the Emirates Stadium, a crucial win that keeps the Gunners within striking distance of Premier League leaders Liverpool. The result pushes Arsenal into second place, four points adrift of Liverpool, as the race for the title intensifies ahead of a grueling early 2025 schedule.

The decisive moment came in the 23rd minute when Kai Havertz latched onto a precise pass from Leandro Trossard, deputizing for the injured Bukayo Saka.

Havertz calmly slotted the ball past Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, giving Arsenal a lead they would defend for the remainder of the match.

Despite dominating possession—91% in the opening 20 minutes—and creating multiple chances, Arsenal failed to capitalize further. Gabriel Jesus saw his 35th-minute strike ruled out for offside, while Martin Ødegaard’s powerful second-half effort was denied by Muric’s impressive reflexes.

For Ipswich Town, the defeat extends their dismal run. The Tractor Boys, winless at Arsenal since 1979, offered little threat and now languish in 19th place with just 12 points. Upcoming clashes against Chelsea and Fulham are now critical for their survival hopes.

Arsenal’s win, while not emphatic, underscores their resilience. Manager Mikel Arteta will be relieved to maintain momentum but faces concerns over squad depth, especially with Saka sidelined.

For the Gunners, every point counts as they seek to end their title drought and close the gap on Liverpool.
