The second day of the 2025 Handball World Championship showcased contrasting fortunes for African representatives Guinea and Egypt.

Making their historic debut in the tournament, Guinea faced a challenging baptism in Group D, suffering a heavy 40-23 defeat to the Netherlands at Varaždin Arena.

Despite the loss, the Syli National marked a milestone as David Michee Eponouh scored their first-ever goal at this level.

Guinea will look to regroup ahead of their next match against Hungary on January 17.

Meanwhile, in Group H, Egypt underlined their credentials as reigning African champions with a commanding 39-25 victory over Argentina at Arena Zagreb.

Goalkeeper Mohamed Aly stood out with an exceptional performance, while right-back Mohammad Sanad delivered a standout display to secure the win.

Egypt will take on Bahrain next in their bid to continue their impressive form.

Elsewhere in the competition, other results included Portugal’s dominant 30-21 win over the United States in Group E and a dramatic 17-17 draw between the Czech Republic and Switzerland in Group A.

Croatia defeated Bahrain 36-22, while Hungary and North Macedonia played out an intense 27-27 stalemate in Group D.

As the tournament progresses, Guinea seeks valuable experience, while Egypt aims to solidify their position as a tournament favorite.
