Gabon Football scandal: FIFA bans coach Assoumou Eyi for life in sexual abuse case

In a landmark decision, FIFA has imposed a lifetime ban on Patrick Assoumou Eyi, former coach of Gabon’s U-17 national team, for repeated sexual abuse of young players. Known as “Capello,” Eyi’s crimes spanned 15 years (2006–2021), with most victims being minors. The ruling, which also includes a 1 million Swiss franc fine, marks a significant step in addressing systemic abuse in Gabonese football.
The scandal erupted in December 2021 when the Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) suspended Eyi.
FIFA later expanded the investigation, uncovering a network of abuse involving other officials, including Serge Ahmed Mombo, Triphel Mabicka, and Orphée Mickala.
Even FEGAFOOT president Pierre-Alain Mounguengui faced imprisonment amid the probe.
FIFA’s Ethics Committee found Eyi guilty of violating articles on mental and physical integrity and abuse of power.
This case highlights the urgent need for accountability in sports governance, particularly in protecting young athletes from exploitation.
While Eyi is the first to face FIFA’s harshest penalty, the investigation continues to expose deeper corruption within Gabon’s football hierarchy.
For victims, the ban represents a long-awaited victory, but it also underscores the pervasive challenges in eradicating abuse in sports.
As FIFA vows to strengthen safeguarding measures, the case serves as a stark reminder of the work still needed to ensure football remains a safe space for all.
