Burkina Faso’s military gains ground in Major counterterrorism offensive

Over the past two weeks, Burkina Faso’s armed forces, supported by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), have launched intensified operations across multiple fronts to reclaim territory from jihadist insurgents. The large-scale offensive has dealt significant blows to terrorist groups that have plagued the country for nearly a decade.
Key successes against insurgents
Military officials report major breakthroughs, including the elimination of high-ranking terrorist commanders, seizure of heavy weaponry, and destruction of key militant bases.
These extremist factions—often referred to locally as “God’s madmen”—have been responsible for brutal attacks, looting, and destabilization across Burkina Faso.
Security forces also captured multiple terrorist accomplices, including informants surveilling military positions.
Multi-region Operations yield results
The offensive targeted hotspots in the North, Centre-North, East, Centre-East, and Boucle du Mouhoun regions, with notable engagements near Bobendé, Yargatenga, Zorkoum, and Pama. Combined ground and air strikes inflicted heavy casualties on insurgents while improving security in these vulnerable areas.
Civilian-Military coordination proves decisive
The synchronized efforts between Burkina Faso’s regular army and civilian VDP forces played a pivotal role in repelling terrorist assaults.
Despite facing persistent attacks, defense forces executed strategic maneuvers to retake previously lost territory.
These consecutive victories signal a potential turning point in Burkina Faso’s long-running security crisis, renewing hopes for lasting stability.
