Burkina Faso celebrates FESPACO winners as President Traoré champions African cinema

On Monday morning at the Koulouba Palace, Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, proudly welcomed the Burkinabe winners of the 29th FESPACO film festival. The filmmakers, whom the head of state fondly called the “VDP of cinema,” presented him with their trophies from Africa’s most prestigious film event.
Speaking for the group, Dani Kouyaté thanked the government for its support, which helped their work shine on the continental stage.
Beyond artistic recognition, these victories have given a much-needed boost of optimism to a nation in search of hope.
Warmly congratulating the artists as ambassadors of national creativity, President Traoré emphasized cinema’s crucial role in shaping a dignified image of Black people.
He recalled how, in the past, film has sometimes perpetuated harmful stereotypes—but thankfully, a new generation of actors and directors has broken those narrative chains.
By backing this movement, Traoré aims to make cinema a powerful force for social change and cultural revival.
For Burkina Faso’s leader, the country’s cultural future depends on a strong film industry—one that carries educational messages and values rooted in tradition. He has directed his government to develop an ambitious plan, elevating cinema to a national priority.
This isn’t just about supporting culture; Traoré sees it as a strategic tool to shape mindsets and inspire Burkinabe youth toward excellence and pride.
