Mali: The ambitious goal of self-sufficiency in rice by 2030

Mali is ramping up efforts to transform its agricultural sector, with rice production taking center stage in its push for food self-sufficiency. During the National Forum on the Intensive Rice Farming System Program (PN-SRI), Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga called for increased investments to help the country meet its bold production goals.

Despite producing a record 3 million tons of rice in 2023-2024, Mali still relies on imports to meet domestic demand. The government now aims to boost output to 5.5 million tons by 2030—an 80% increase—by modernizing farming techniques, improving infrastructure, and training producers.
