Gambia launches probe into controversial sale of ex-President Jammeh’s seized assets

The Gambian government has ordered an investigation into the sale of assets confiscated from ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh after reports revealed alleged irregularities. Luxury cars, livestock, and land—part of $360m in assets linked to Jammeh’s alleged corruption—were sold at questionable prices, some to officials’ relatives, per local media.

President Adama Barrow vowed transparency, admitting he learned of some sales only recently.

Parliament and auditors are probing, but critics demand an independent inquiry, calling the legislature biased.

Protests erupted after reports showed Jammeh’s Rolls-Royce and Bentley were missing from sale records, while other items sold far below market value.

Jammeh, exiled since 2017, denies wrongdoing. The U.S. has already seized a Maryland mansion tied to him. Rights groups urge a freeze on further sales, citing a “breach of public trust.”
