Burkina Faso – Senegal: An alliance in the making for regional stability

The Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, was received this Friday afternoon by the President of the Burkinabe Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, as part of a 48-hour working visit to Ouagadougou. This meeting, marked by the strengthening of bilateral ties, allowed both sides to discuss common security challenges and the prospects for enhanced cooperation between the two countries.

Accompanied by his Burkinabe counterpart, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, Ousmane Sonko conveyed a message of solidarity from Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the Senegalese people in view of the security challenges facing Burkina Faso. “No country in the sub-region will be spared if this scourge continues to spread”, he warned, emphasizing the necessity for a collective response against terrorism.

Beyond security issues, this visit forms part of a dynamic of strategic rapprochement, particularly following the withdrawal of the countries of the Sahel States Alliance (AES) from ECOWAS. Senegal, actively engaged in regional mediation, thus reaffirms its determination to play a bridging role between the various parties.

Furthermore, Ousmane Sonko commended the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, paying tribute to “a leader who illuminates the patriotic and Pan-African struggles”. This powerful symbol highlights the convergence of visions between the two states regarding sovereignty and African integration.

With common commitments against insecurity and shared values, Burkina Faso and Senegal are opening a new chapter in their cooperation, marked by the pooling of efforts for sustainable regional stability.
