AES – ECOWAS: A salutary first meeting to relaunch security and regional cooperation

In a context marked by tensions following the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS and the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a historic meeting was held on Thursday in Bamako. This gathering, the first of its kind since the announced split, allowed both blocs to express their shared willingness to cooperate against terrorism and preserve the achievements of West African integration.

According to a joint statement, ECOWAS and the AES acknowledged the urgent need to enhance security collaboration in the face of the terrorist threat while working to maintain the free movement of people and goods in the region.

Discussions covered political, diplomatic, legal, and socio-economic issues, with a stated commitment to prioritize the interests of the people.

The meeting, which brought together the President of the ECOWAS Commission and the foreign ministers of the AES, paves the way for future negotiations on matters of mutual interest.

It marks a first step toward easing tensions after months of disagreements, particularly over sanctions imposed on AES countries following military coups.

Both sides agreed to continue dialogue,  an advancement hailed as an encouraging sign for regional stability. While challenges remain, this initiative demonstrates that, despite their differences, ECOWAS and the AES share a common concern: the security and development of West Africa.
