Burkina Faso: Government announces lower prices for essential medicines to improve access to healthcare

In an economic context marked by numerous challenges, the government led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré is resolutely pursuing its social reforms in favor of the population. On Monday, May 26, the Ministry of Health announced a major measure: a significant reduction in the prices of essential generic medicines in public and accredited private health facilities.
This decision, welcomed by many stakeholders in the sector, clearly reflects President Traoré’s vision of ensuring accessible healthcare for all, across the country. It is part of a broader effort to structurally transform the national healthcare system and demonstrates the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on households in a sustainable way.
By lowering profit margins on essential medicines and medical supplies, the government is taking a methodical approach to strengthening healthcare coverage. Special attention has been given to vital products such as antivenom serum, meningococcal and rabies vaccines, as well as those required for travelers, particularly pilgrims to Mecca. The price reductions for the ACWY-135 vaccine and the yellow fever vaccine alone represent a yearly relief of 241 million CFA francs, made possible through the efforts of CAMEG.
With this reform, Captain Ibrahim Traoré reaffirms his commitment to governance focused on social well-being and health equity. This marks another step toward building a Burkina Faso firmly committed to health equity, resilience, and self-determination.
