Burkina Faso: Guinea-Bissau takes inspiration from Burkina Faso’s social protection model

Ouagadougou, June 30, 2025 – As part of efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation, a government delegation from Guinea-Bissau is currently in Burkina Faso to learn from its experience in social protection. Led by Ligia Monteino Dias, Chief of Staff to the Bissau-Guinean Prime Minister, the delegation was received on Monday by Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

This visit is part of a regional initiative to share experiences, launched by Guinea-Bissau following the recent rollout of its National Social Protection Policy. After an initial mission to Cape Verde, the Bissau-Guinean authorities are continuing their tour of West Africa to enhance their emerging social protection system.

“This mission is part of our South-South cooperation efforts and follows the creation of a commission dedicated to implementing our new social policy,” explained Ligia Monteino Dias after the meeting.

The delegation praised the quality of the discussions with Burkinabe authorities and the warm welcome received in Ouagadougou. “Burkina Faso is a brotherly country. We truly feel at home here, and we thank the authorities for their fraternal hospitality and availability,” she said.

A working session, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the Burkinabe Prime Minister, provided an opportunity to share good practices implemented in Burkina Faso, particularly through the Permanent Secretariat of the National Council for Social Protection (SP-CNPS).

This cooperation represents an important step for Guinea-Bissau, which aims to build on successful experiences across the continent to structure an inclusive and sustainable social policy.
