Mali: Record cocaine seizure by customs at Zantiguila, near Bamako

Bamako – Malian Customs Seize Nearly 26 kg of Pure Cocaine in Major Anti-Trafficking Operation

During the night of July 9 to 10, 2025, Malian customs carried out one of the largest drug seizures in recent years. In Zantiguila, about 30 kilometers from Bamako, the Mobile Intervention Brigade (BMI) intercepted 24 packages of pure cocaine, totaling 25.948 kilograms.

The market value of the drugs is estimated at over 1.2 billion CFA francs, according to initial reports from authorities. This represents a strategic victory in the fight against illicit trafficking in the region.

A Targeted Operation Enabled by Customs Intelligence

Hidden in a vehicle bound for the northern part of the country, the shipment was uncovered thanks to meticulous customs intelligence work. This seizure underscores the increasing professionalism of the BMI—an elite unit of the Malian Customs equipped with advanced technical skills and high responsiveness.

A Major Security Issue

This operation comes amid growing concerns that drug trafficking routes across the Sahel are being used to finance criminal and terrorist groups. The seizure therefore reinforces the role of Customs as a key player in national security, far beyond its traditional fiscal responsibilities.

A Strong Message to Criminal Networks

This major bust demonstrates the growing strength of customs forces in the fight against transnational crime. “Malian Customs reaffirms its commitment to protecting the territory against all forms of threats,” said a source close to the General Directorate.

This record seizure comes as the authorities ramp up efforts to modernize customs services and enhance their effectiveness in an increasingly unstable regional environment.
