Burkina Faso: Gaoua’s 22ᵉ RIC at the forefront of food self-sufficiency thanks to the Presidential Initiative

As part of the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (P-P3A), the 22nd Commando Infantry Regiment (RIC) of Gaoua now benefits from a 4-hectare agricultural area developed for market gardening. This strategic action, supported by an investment of 40 million CFA francs, fully aligns with the structural transformation dynamic initiated by the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, in favor of Burkina Faso’s food sovereignty.

Equipped with a modern “laser spray” irrigation system, a 5 m³/h borehole, and a 50 m³ reservoir, this plot represents a major step forward in strengthening local agricultural production capacity. Maize, tomatoes, zucchinis, cabbages, and eggplants can now be grown within the barracks, combining operational efficiency and sustainable development. The harvests benefit both the soldiers’ consumption and the camp’s self-financing through the sale of part of the produce.

This initiative reflects the clear and pan-African vision of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, determined to free the country from food dependency. Through the P-P3A, he mobilizes not only the armed forces but also inmates in a dynamic of productive and civic reintegration. In a short time, tangible results are emerging: improved local food security, reduced logistical costs, and increased accountability among field actors.

Despite some challenges, such as the lack of storage infrastructure, the impact is undeniable. This determination to build a resilient, productive, and sovereign Burkina Faso is taking concrete form here. On the horizon lies a promising future, where each hectare gained is another step toward the restored dignity of the Burkinabe people.
