Premier League/ Boxing Day football tradition faces disruption
The cherished English tradition of a full slate of Premier League matches on Boxing Day is set for a significant change this year. Reports indicate that December 26th will not feature a full fixture list, with only one match potentially scheduled for the festive date.
This break from tradition stems from the league’s broadcast agreements, which guarantee 33 weekend rounds. As Boxing Day falls on a Thursday this season, the fixture calendar has been adjusted, moving the matchday to the adjacent weekend.
While the lower leagues of the EFL and the National League will maintain a full Boxing Day schedule, it marks a rare reduction for the top flight.
The last time fewer than three top-flight games were played on December 26th was in 1982.
Officials are confident this is a one-off disruption due to the calendar. Normal service is expected to resume next year when Boxing Day falls on a Saturday.
For now, fans face the prospect of a quieter festive football period, with the Premier League’s intricate scheduling “chess match” resulting in a scaled-back offering.
