Football/ Africa: José Peseiro appointed Zamalek Head Coach

Portuguese manager José Peseiro has been named the new head coach of Egyptian giants Zamalek, just weeks after leaving his role with Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their 2023 AFCON final run.
The 64-year-old, who had been without a contract since March 1, 2024, signed an 18-month deal with the Cairo-based club, replacing Swiss coach Christian Gross, who was dismissed despite a strong record of 8 wins, 3 draws, and 2 losses in two months.
This marks Peseiro’s second stint in Egyptian football, having previously managed Al Ahly during the 2015-2016 season, where he achieved 8 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses.
His return to Cairo comes with high expectations: Zamalek, currently third in the Egyptian Premier League, last won the title in 2022 and are also defending champions of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Peseiro led his first training session on Friday ahead of his debut against Petrojet in the league.
Known for his tactical expertise and experience as a former Real Madrid assistant coach, Peseiro faces the challenge of delivering both domestic and continental success for the “White Knights.”
With a career marked by both highs and short tenures, Peseiro’s recent AFCON success with Nigeria has reignited optimism about his abilities. Zamalek fans will hope he can replicate that form and restore the club to its former glory.
