Murder suspect escapes detention in Kenyan Police station, raising security concerns

A murder suspect, Kelvin Kangethe, who fled the United States after allegedly killing his girlfriend, has managed to escape from a Kenyan police station where he was detained.

The 41-year-old was arrested last week in Nairobi after being on the run for several months.

Despite a court allowing his detention for 30 days pending possible extradition, Kangethe walked out of the Muthaiga Police Station in Nairobi during a meeting with a man who claimed to be his lawyer.

The police officers who were on duty and the supposed lawyer have been arrested, but Kangethe’s current whereabouts are unknown, leading to a renewed search by Kenyan police.

The suspect is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, in October last year, leaving her body in a car at Boston Logan International Airport before fleeing to Kenya.

The security lapse and Kangethe’s escape have raised concerns and embarrassment for Kenyan authorities.
