Togo / Modernisation of Communes: A Further step towards decentralisation

As part of President Faure Gnassingbé’s policy of decentralization, the Togolese government is intensifying its efforts to improve working conditions for municipalities by constructing new administrative buildings.

These initiatives aim to equip municipalities with modern and suitable structures, thereby facilitating the work of local elected officials and municipal staff.

Last week marked a significant milestone in this process with the inauguration of new municipal buildings, starting with the Yoto 2 municipality.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Minister Hodabalo Awaté, highlighting the government’s commitment to modernizing local infrastructure.

This ambitious project, funded with 9.8 billion FCFA by the German Development Bank (KfW), is part of the third phase of the Decentralization Support Project (PAD).

The new municipal buildings include offices for the mayor and deputies, a civil registry, a reception hall, and a multipurpose room for council meetings and deliberations.

These facilities aim to improve working conditions for local authorities and enhance administrative efficiency within municipalities.

Minister Hodabalo Awaté reaffirmed the government’s determination to create a modern and appropriate working environment for local communities.

“The government is firmly committed to modernizing infrastructure to provide an appropriate living and working environment for local communities,” he stated.

The Decentralization Support Project plans to construct 40 municipal buildings in total, demonstrating the breadth of the Togolese government’s commitment to strengthening decentralization and improving working conditions for municipalities nationwide.

This initiative is tangible evidence of ongoing efforts to support local communities and promote balanced and inclusive development throughout Togo.
