In the wake of the tragic collapse of Saints Academy in Plateau State, Nigeria, the community remains in shock as they mourn the loss of 22 students. The disaster, which occurred yesterday, has left a deep scar on the local population.

Rescue operations have successfully pulled 132 students from the rubble, with 58 individuals still receiving treatment in hospitals.

Ruth Habila, a teacher at Saints Academy, recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the collapse.

She had noticed a dangerous crack in the building and quickly warned the students, lamenting the lack of prior alerts to the school administration.

This incident has once again highlighted issues of poor construction quality, inadequate inspections, and corruption among officials circumventing safety regulations.

In response, Plateau State authorities have pledged to investigate and enforce stricter building standards.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced decisive actions, stating, “This school is now closed, and we must take responsibility.

We will investigate the cause of this collapse and extend our inspections to all schools, including public ones, to ensure no lives are endangered in the future.”

Friday’s accident is the deadliest in Nigeria since November 2021, when a building under construction in Lagos collapsed, killing at least 45 people, most of them construction workers.

The Plateau State tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for improved building safety and oversight.
