Côte d’Ivoire/Commerce: Energy drinks sacrificed for the sake of competing products?

For several months now, Ivorians have been grappling with a pressing question: why has the suspension of certain alcoholic energy drinks been extended indefinitely, and what is the uncertain future of these products in the market?

In October 2023, Ivorian authorities announced a temporary suspension of commercial activities related to certain alcoholic energy drinks.

This decision, initially set to last until February 2024, aimed to assess the situation regarding the sale of these beverages, particularly in light of the major football competition expected to conclude on February 11, 2024.

However, as this date approaches, there has been no official announcement signaling the imminent return of these products to the market.

Retailers who once enjoyed significant sales from these beverages are increasingly frustrated with the extended suspension.

Many market players are losing hope as similar alternatives gain traction in Côte d’Ivoire.

The lack of a clear justification for the continued suspension adds to the confusion.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the health concerns originally cited for the suspension remain valid, but no detailed explanation has been provided to the public.

Meanwhile, some young Ivorians continue to jeopardize their health by consuming drinks mixed with harmful substances like Tramadol.

Citizens contacted on the issue are urging authorities to focus on eliminating toxic products used in drug production, rather than prolonging the suspension of alcoholic energy drinks.

This ongoing uncertainty leaves the public waiting for a clear resolution, while highlighting broader challenges in regulating harmful substances in Côte d’Ivoire.
