Côte d’Ivoire: The country’s plea for support for the people of the Sahel at the UN

During the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Ivorian Vice President Meyliet Tiémoko Koné made an urgent appeal for global action to support the beleaguered populations of the Sahel, who are bearing the brunt of the ongoing battle against terrorist groups.

His address highlighted the severe impact of these conflicts, not just in terms of human suffering but also on the region’s socio-economic progress.

“These conflicts are gradually erasing years of hard-won progress aimed at improving the lives of local populations,” Koné lamented, emphasizing the decades of work that have gone into uplifting this part of Africa.

Today, however, the situation has deteriorated to the point where it threatens not only the stability of the Sahel but the entire West African region.

The Vice President warned that the consequences of the current crisis could reach beyond Africa’s borders, posing a global threat if swift and effective actions are not taken.

In his speech, Koné called on nations around the world to unite in supporting Sahelian countries in their fight against terrorism.

He stressed that regional security cannot be secured by the Sahel states alone, many of which are under-resourced and ill-equipped to confront well-organized and well-funded armed groups.

For this reason, international collaboration is crucial to preventing the further spread of violence, which could lead to the collapse of the entire region.

Moreover, Vice President Koné reaffirmed Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to playing an active role in the pursuit of regional stability.

In keeping with its longstanding tradition of hospitality, Côte d’Ivoire has welcomed thousands of people fleeing violence from neighboring Sahelian countries, offering shelter and humanitarian assistance.

“The Ivorian people provide these distressed populations with the best care and support possible,” Koné stated, highlighting Côte d’Ivoire’s willingness to stand in solidarity with those affected.

This act of compassion exemplifies Côte d’Ivoire’s broader stance as a key player in promoting peace and security across West Africa, reinforcing its role as a leader in regional cooperation and humanitarian efforts.
