Burkina Faso unveils landmark agrarian and Land reform

On February 5, 2025, the Burkinabe government took a decisive step by adopting a groundbreaking bill aimed at overhauling the country’s agrarian and land management systems.

This reform, hailed as a transformative milestone, establishes a fundamental principle: all land will now be owned by the state.

The initiative seeks to ensure more rigorous and equitable management of land, a critical sector for the nation’s economic development. Key measures include the introduction of long-term agricultural leases, providing local farmers with greater land security.

Simultaneously, the reform formally recognizes the customary rights of rural communities, safeguarding ancestral land management practices.

By centralizing land regulation under state authority, the government aims to strengthen its role as the primary overseer of this strategic sector while ensuring that local populations have secure access to land—a vital resource for their long-term well-being and prosperity.

This reform aligns with a broader vision of sustainable development, promoting harmonious agricultural land management, curbing speculative practices, and enhancing community resilience in the face of environmental challenges.

Through this bold initiative, Burkina Faso is laying the foundation for a robust legal framework to support its agricultural and economic growth, grounded in principles of social justice and national sovereignty. The reform marks a significant step toward a more equitable and sustainable future for the country.
