Mali: Security first, elections later!

The countries forming the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) face a critical common challenge: the escalating threat of terrorism fueled by the expansion of jihadism across the Sahel region. In response, the governments of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, all under military leadership, have made security their utmost priority.

These nations are directing significant efforts towards eradicating terrorism while also focusing on creating employment opportunities for young people, viewing this as a crucial strategy to address the root causes of extremism.

Reflecting this strategy, Malian authorities, like their counterparts in Burkina Faso, stress the need to prioritize security before engaging in discussions about electoral processes.

During a recent dialogue with political stakeholders, Malian Prime Minister Choguel Maïga reiterated the transition government’s stance on this matter.

He emphasized the imperative of resolving existing security challenges before moving forward with presidential elections.

«Until we have effectively tackled the insecurity, discussions about elections remain theoretical. Rebuilding our nation requires time and concerted efforts», asserted the Prime Minister.

The military-led administration in Mali sees this approach as a commitment to the nation’s collective welfare above individual aspirations.

«Some view elections as an ultimate goal (…) Our focus is on placing Mali’s interests above personal ambitions», clarified Choguel Maïga.

To support his viewpoint, the Prime Minister referenced Haiti’s experience, highlighting that despite numerous electoral cycles, the country continues to grapple with instability.

He underscored that elections alone do not serve as a panacea for a nation’s challenges.

Elections have, in fact, contributed to divisions within Mali, playing into the desires of external powers,” Maïga emphasized.

Panafrican observers urge Malians to heed their leaders’ insights and to unite against terrorism, striving to forge a peaceful, cohesive, and prosperous nation for all its citizens.
