Togo / Parliamentary and regional elections: international observers recognise transparency

Togo’s recent legislative and regional elections have earned commendation from both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) for their transparency and peaceful conduct.

The simultaneous elections, conducted peacefully earlier this week, led to the renewal of the National Assembly, comprising 113 deputies, and the inaugural election of 179 regional councilors for the Senate, a newly established institution.

These elections hold paramount significance for Togo as the new Parliament, consisting of the National Assembly and the Senate, will play a pivotal role in electing the President of the Republic and the President of the Council of Ministers, the head of the executive, in accordance with the newly adopted constitution in April.

ECOWAS and the AU commended the active citizen participation and democratic engagement witnessed during this electoral process, as well as the efficiency and professionalism displayed by Togolese electoral authorities.

International observers noted the adherence to fundamental democratic principles, including voting freedom and the integrity of the electoral process.

The recognition of election transparency by ECOWAS and the AU underscores the Togolese authorities’ commitment to strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law.

These elections signify a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey and bolster the legitimacy of democratically elected institutions.

As Togo, under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, looks ahead, sustaining this democratic momentum and ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections that authentically reflect the will of the Togolese people remains paramount.

ECOWAS, the AU, and the international community remain steadfast in their support of Togo’s efforts towards fostering a dynamic and inclusive democracy.
