Al Ahly claims record 12th African Champions League title
Al Ahly of Egypt clinched their 12th African Champions League title on Saturday, May 25. The decisive moment came early in the match when a deflection by Roger Aholou, midfielder for Espérance de Tunis, resulted in an own goal that secured the victory for the Cairo team, allowing them to retain their crown.
This triumph marks Al Ahly’s 12th championship win out of 17 final appearances, further cementing their dominance in African football.
«Our happiness is beyond words; I swear to God. We weren’t at the stadium, but my joy is the same as if I were there. This is our 12th championship win, twice as many as our rivals. We are the champions of Africa, and no one can match us», exclaimed Alaa Sayed, a devoted Al Ahly fan.
Despite their efforts, Espérance de Tunis, who have won the title four times, fell short of equalizing just before the end of the match, with attempts from Brazilian duo Yan Sasse and Rodrigo Silva.
Espérance finished as runners-up for the fifth time in their history.
