Burkina Faso/Energy: Construction of a nuclear power station, history will remember that it was thanks to the enlightened vision of Captain TRAORE

On June 5th, the Burkinabe Minister in charge of energy and the Director-General of ROSATOM, the Russian energy giant, signed significant memorandums in Saint Petersburg.

This signature is marking a crucial step in Burkina Faso’s journey towards constructing its first nuclear power plant for energy sovereignty.

President Captain Ibrahim Traore’s visionary leadership initiated this ambitious endeavour, aiming to liberate the nation from energy dependencies that have long plagued Burkina Faso and the wider sub-region.

This forward-thinking approach gained momentum following a strategic meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit in July 2023 in Saint Petersburg.

Since then, discussions, negotiations, and concrete commitments have propelled the nuclear power plant project forward.

The signed memorandums emphasize personnel training, public awareness campaigns, evaluation processes, and the overall development of the nuclear facility.

The forthcoming steps include hosting Russian technicians on Burkinabe soil and finalizing an intergovernmental agreement, setting the stage for robust nuclear cooperation.

Burkina Faso’s authorities are steadfast in their determination to expedite this transformative project, ultimately benefiting the Burkinabe population with sustainable and reliable energy solutions.
