Mali’s “Basketteuses de Bamako” bring unique fusion of art and sport to Lomé

In a bold and creative display, the ‘Basketteuses de Bamako’, a group of six Malian artists and basketball players, captivated audiences in Lomé, Togo’s capital.

Their performance, blending ball juggling with drumming, music, and dance, showcased a daring fusion of athleticism and artistic expression.

Led by Thomas Guérineau, a former juggler with a passion for rhythm and movement, the Malian artists use basketballs as central elements in their artistic repertoire.

Since November 2021, Guérineau has collaborated closely with these women basketballers from Bamako, shaping their performances into a unique spectacle over two years.

What’s remarkable is the rhythmic complexity when the basketball hits – it produces a syncopated three-beat sound,” explained Guérineau, highlighting the musical intricacies woven into their performances.

Audience member Makafui Zandji expressed admiration for the innovation and interest sparked by the performance: “I found it very innovative and interesting.”

Beyond juggling, the ‘Basketteuses’ incorporate singing and dancing, creating a visual and auditory symphony that enriches cultural exchange and understanding.

This debut in Africa has been extraordinary. The warm reception in Lomé exceeded our expectations,” shared Guérineau, reflecting on the group’s successful African premiere.

Before their Lomé performance, the ‘Basketteuses’ hosted a masterclass for young Togolese students, sharing their skills and inspiring future generations in the innovative art form.

The ‘Basketteuses de Bamako’ not only left a lasting impression with their dynamic stage presence in Lomé but also ignited a newfound passion for art and creativity among Togolese youth, promising a legacy of cultural exchange and artistic exploration.
