Burkina Faso/Counter-terrorism: The Government’s response to detractors who vilify the work of the VDPs

The Burkinabe government has reassured its citizens and praised the efforts of the Volunteers for the Defense of the homeland (VDP) amidst ongoing allegations from detractors and human rights organizations.

The government asserts that these groups often act in the interest of external parties rather than the Burkinabe people.

Western media outlets and human rights NGOs have repeatedly accused the VDP of misconduct in their fight against terrorist groups.

However, the Burkinabe government maintains that these volunteer fighters were recruited specifically to protect their fellow citizens whose rights to freedom and life are under threat from criminal elements.

The government emphasized that the VDP undergo comprehensive training that includes military practices and human rights modules.

These volunteers, who have joined forces with the national army to safeguard their communities and reclaim their land, receive regular capacity-building to enhance their effectiveness.

According to the Burkinabe authorities, these unfounded allegations are designed to tarnish the reputation of the VDP, demoralize the fighters, and ultimately hinder the fight against terrorism.

The government reiterated last weekend that the VDP respect human rights in their counter-terrorism efforts, reaffirming their commitment to both national security and human rights.
