Kamala Harris secures democratic nomination following Biden’s withdrawal
Washington, July 23, 2024 – Vice-President Kamala Harris has garnered sufficient delegate support to secure the Democratic nomination for the presidential race, as reported by CBS News.
According to an Associated Press survey, Harris has received endorsements from over the 1,976 delegates needed to clinch the nomination on the first ballot.
Harris expressed pride in securing “broad support” and is set to formally accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) scheduled for August 1-7.
The endorsements, while non-binding, indicate a strong likelihood of her nomination being confirmed if the support holds.
The backing of 27 state delegations follows President Joe Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he is exiting the race.
Since then, Harris’s campaign has seen a surge in donations and endorsements from leading Democrats.
Addressing her campaign staff in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris outlined her vision for the future, contrasting it with former President Donald Trump’s policies.
“Our campaign has always been about two different versions of what we see as the future of our country,” Harris stated, emphasizing a progressive vision.
She also praised Biden’s accomplishments and reflected on her tenure as vice-president.
Biden, isolating in Delaware due to Covid-19, made his first comments post-withdrawal via a phone call to Harris’s team.
He urged them to support Harris wholeheartedly, affirming her capability and emphasizing the importance of defeating Trump in the upcoming election.
“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” Biden said, promising to stay actively involved in the campaign. He is expected to return to the White House on Tuesday.
