Macklemore cancels Dubai Gig, Highlights Sudan conflict

Rapper Macklemore has cancelled an upcoming performance in Dubai, not in solidarity with Gaza as some fans speculated, but in protest against the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and triggered a humanitarian disaster, involves the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) battling the Sudanese army.

The RSF has been widely accused of atrocities, including sexual violence and ethnic cleansing.

In an Instagram post, Macklemore cited the catastrophic situation in Sudan, where millions are at risk of starvation. He questioned his role as an artist, stating, “If I take the money while knowing it doesn’t sit right with my spirit, how am I any different from the politicians I’ve been actively protesting against?”

Macklemore’s decision has drawn attention to the brutal conflict, which has received far less global coverage than crises in Ukraine or Gaza.

Activists hope other artists will follow his lead in raising awareness.

The RSF, linked to the notorious Janjaweed militia accused of genocide in Sudan 20 years ago, controls lucrative gold mines in the Darfur region.

The UAE, where Dubai is located, has been accused of funding the RSF, with evidence suggesting it has supplied drones and transported weapons to the group in pursuit of economic interests in the Red Sea region.
