Burkina Faso: When RFI and Human Rights Watch lack credibility in the face of a nation in search of security

A report from the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW), released on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and circulated by Radio France Internationale (RFI), accuses Burkinabe military forces of compelling civilians to dig defensive trenches around their town, resulting in tragic casualties.

This account, which implicates Burkina Faso’s armed forces, raises questions about its accuracy and seems to lean more towards disparagement than objective reporting.

These allegations come amid a period of strong national mobilization in Burkina Faso, with the people standing firmly behind President Ibrahim Traoré’s efforts to secure the nation.

While the population is encouraged to participate in defense measures, the claim that civilians are forced under duress is misleading.

The commitment of Burkinabe citizens to defend their homeland is voluntary and rooted in a strong sense of national duty.

They recognize that safeguarding their country is a collective responsibility, and in light of current challenges, they are unwavering in their dedication to national security.

French media, especially RFI, appears intent on portraying Burkina Faso’s government and its counter-terrorism efforts in a negative light.

Such reports, often repeated without thorough verification, seem driven by foreign interests aiming to sow discord and uncertainty within the Burkinabe population.

In the face of this misinformation, it is crucial for every Burkinabe citizen to stay alert. These tactics no longer shake the people’s determination; they steadfastly support the national defense initiatives led by their authorities.

United and resilient, the Burkinabe people see beyond the falsehoods, focusing instead on their vision of a secure, united nation resolute in resisting any threats.
