FRANCE FOOTBALL CHIEF BREAKS SILENCE ON REAL MADRID’S BALLON D’OR BOYCOTT

France Football’s director Vincent Garcia has revealed the behind-the-scenes drama of the 2024 Ballon d’Or, addressing Real Madrid’s controversial boycott and Rodri’s narrow victory over Vinicius Jr.

“It was an extremely close race,” Garcia disclosed to “L’Équipe”, explaining that votes were split among Real Madrid players, with Bellingham and Carvajal’s top-five presence potentially costing Vinicius crucial points. Complete voting details will be published in France Football on November 9.

Responding to rumors that Rodri had leaked his win to Real Madrid, Garcia was emphatic: “Rodri’s genuine emotion on stage speaks for itself. He knew nothing beforehand.” He acknowledged facing intense pressure from multiple clubs seeking advance notice of the winner, with Madrid being particularly insistent.

“We were crystal clear from the start: this year’s winner would not be notified in advance,” Garcia stated. “Some clubs panicked at the last moment, attempting to change these established rules. I’m not convinced Real Madrid was entirely certain about Vinicius’s loss when they decided to boycott.”

Garcia expressed disappointment at Madrid’s reaction but preferred to focus on the historic nature of Rodri’s victory, noting the rarity of Spanish winners and defensive midfielders claiming the prestigious award.

“Rodri is more than just a defensive midfielder. He’s an extraordinary player, and this win perhaps makes up for some Spanish greats who missed out in the past“, he said.
