Patrick Kluivert takes Charge of Indonesia’s National Football team

Indonesia has turned to football icon Patrick Kluivert as their new head coach, signaling ambitious plans for the future. The 48-year-old Dutchman, known for his glittering career with Ajax, Barcelona, and the Netherlands, steps into the role as Indonesia eyes qualification for the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026.

Kluivert succeeds Shin Tae-yong, signing a two-year deal with an option for extension. His appointment comes as Indonesia seeks to elevate their presence on the global stage, having only qualified for the World Cup once, back in 1938, as the Dutch East Indies.

Tasked with reinvigorating the 127th-ranked team, Kluivert’s immediate challenge will be a crucial third-round qualifying tie against Australia in March.

The stakes are high, with two automatic World Cup spots available in the six-team group and two more leading to further playoff opportunities.

Though Indonesia sits third in their group after six games, Kluivert’s experience offers hope.

His managerial journey has seen him lead Curacao on two occasions, work under Louis van Gaal and Clarence Seedorf with the Netherlands and Cameroon, and most recently coach Turkish club Adana Demirspor.

For Indonesia, Kluivert’s appointment represents a bold step forward, blending local aspirations with international expertise in pursuit of footballing excellence.
