Togo unveils ambitious 10-year plan to revolutionize agriculture by 2034

Togo has launched a groundbreaking decade-long initiative, the ProMAT (Programme de modernisation de l’agriculture au Togo) in english, Togo’s agriculture modernization program aimed at transforming its agricultural sector between 2025 and 2034.

Unveiled last week to key stakeholders and financial partners, this strategic plan seeks to boost agriculture’s contribution to economic growth, create jobs, and promote social inclusion.

The ProMAT addresses two critical challenges: the impacts of climate change and the competitiveness of local agricultural products.

For a country where agriculture remains a cornerstone of the economy and a vital tool for ensuring food security, this program is a national priority.

Built around four strategic pillars, the ProMAT first focuses on enhancing agricultural production while strengthening the resilience of farming systems to climate variability.

It also aims to improve the processing and marketing of agricultural products, ensuring stable and profitable markets for farmers.

Another key component of the program is improving access to financing and promoting private-sector initiatives, which are crucial for driving investments in agriculture.

Lastly, the ProMAT emphasizes strengthening agricultural governance to enhance the effectiveness of public policies and improve coordination among stakeholders.

This initiative builds on Togo’s previous efforts, such as the National Program for Investment and Food Security (PNIASA) and the National Program for Agricultural Investment, Food Security, and Nutrition (PNIASAN).

Through the ProMAT, Togo aims to modernize its agricultural sector, enhance its resilience to climate challenges, and create a more competitive and inclusive industry capable of meeting the country’s economic and social needs.

This ambitious plan reflects Togo’s commitment to sustainable development and its vision for a prosperous agricultural future.
