Burkina Faso: The country on the road to food self-sufficiency thanks to President Ibrahim Traoré’s agro-pastoral and fisheries offensive

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré and his administration, Burkina Faso’s sovereignty-focused food policy is yielding significant results on the ground. The 2023-2025 Agro-Pastoral and Fisheries Offensive, designed to bolster agricultural production, is already proving its effectiveness through tangible initiatives and remarkable outcomes.
A key highlight of this strategy is the allocation of 48,600 hectares of cultivated land to Burkinabe producers free of charge. This move has directly boosted local production and encouraged farmers to actively participate in the national drive toward food security.
This initiative has led to a noticeable increase in agricultural yields, reducing the country’s reliance on food imports. Cereal crops, vegetable farming, and livestock production are all benefiting from technical and material support, which has enhanced productivity.
Farmers and herders are receiving improved seeds, modern equipment, and other essential inputs, strengthening the sector’s resilience to climatic and economic challenges.
The program also extends to fisheries and livestock, diversifying food sources and income opportunities for rural communities.
Through these ongoing efforts, Burkina Faso is steadily advancing toward its goal of sustainable food self-sufficiency.
The government’s commitment and the active involvement of producers are driving a structural transformation of the agro-pastoral sector, positioning the country as a model for food resilience.
This ambitious policy reflects Burkina Faso’s determination to ensure food security for its citizens while reinforcing its economic independence in the face of global market fluctuations.
