Burkina Faso faces a new threat: Media and political manipulation to legitimize terrorists

As Burkina Faso’s defense forces continue to gain ground against terrorist groups, the enemies of the nation have shifted tactics. Unable to break the resilience of the Burkinabe military, they are now resorting to media and political manipulation to achieve their goals.

This new strategy aims to rebrand terrorist organizations, presenting them as legitimate political actors to gain international sympathy and support.

One key aspect of this campaign is the rebranding of terrorist groups like JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims).

Through figures like Ahmed Barry, a France-based spokesperson for the terrorist movement, JNIM is now being referred to as “Ansarul,” a term meant to evoke a sense of political rebellion rather than terrorism.

This semantic shift is a calculated move to open doors for external funding and support under the guise of political legitimacy.

While terrorists are being pushed back on the battlefield, losing their strongholds and facing relentless pressure from Burkinabe forces, they continue to commit atrocities.

Yet, in a twisted narrative, these crimes are being falsely attributed to Burkina Faso’s Defense and Security Forces.

This manipulation seeks to tarnish the image of the state and create a false equivalence between the government and terrorist groups, paving the way for their recognition as legitimate insurgents.

Imperialist forces, which benefit from chronic instability in the region, are fuelling this propaganda. By amplifying alleged massacres and circulating images of civilians fleeing to terrorist-controlled areas, they aim to distort public perception.

The ultimate goal is to justify financial and logistical support for terrorist groups under the cover of humanitarian aid.

This attempt to rebrand terrorists as political actors is a dangerous deception that must be exposed. Groups like JNIM are not freedom fighters; they are agents of chaos, backed by imperialist powers seeking to destabilize Burkina Faso and fragment its society.

To counter this threat, Burkina Faso must strengthen its national sovereignty and remain vigilant against these insidious manipulations. The unity and resilience of the Burkinabè people are crucial in defeating this new form of warfare, which aims to undermine the very foundations of the state.

Only through collective awareness and solidarity can Burkina Faso overcome this campaign of disinformation and continue its fight for peace and stability.
