Togo: Extension of the school feeding programme, Faure Gnassingbé’s ongoing commitment to an inclusive Togo

The Togolese government, under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, continues its efforts to improve citizens’ access to basic social services, particularly education. The school canteen initiative stands out as one of the major reforms implemented in the education system to ensure that all Togolese children, especially those in rural areas, can attend school.

This reform, now extended nationwide, is gradually being rolled out across all public schools.

Building on this school feeding program, the Togolese authorities, with support from their partners, have launched a new Integrated Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) Project, which relies on locally sourced produce.

The new program targets the Kara and Savanes regions, areas affected by the security crisis in the Sahel.

According to the minister overseeing the initiative, the project aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities. It will benefit 36,000 students across 130 schools.

Beyond addressing food needs, the program promotes inclusive economic transformation through agricultural sovereignty and rural development.

Additionally, the government plans to rehabilitate school kitchens, install improved cooking stoves, establish educational gardens, and implement other related measures.

These initiatives align with the government’s 2020-2025 roadmap, reflecting President Gnassingbé’s commitment to building an inclusive and equitable Togo.
