Ouagadougou prepares for Historic inauguration of Thomas Sankara mausoleum on May 17, 2025

On May 17, 2025, Burkina Faso’s capital will witness a landmark event—the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum and Memorial, honoring the revolutionary leader and his twelve comrades. The date holds deep significance, marking the anniversary of May 17, 1983, the start of the Democratic and Popular Revolution.

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, meeting with the International Committee for the Thomas Sankara Memorial (CIMTS) on May 5, reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to the project.

The mausoleum is the first phase of a broader memorial dedicated to preserving the legacy of Sankara, the iconic leader of the 1983 August Revolution.

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is undergoing a transformative movement centered on sovereignty, dignity, and national renewal.

Traoré, spearheading a progressive popular revolution, has prioritized the memorial as a cornerstone of Sankara’s political heritage.

The April 30, 2025, mass demonstrations in support of President Traoré highlighted the global resonance of Burkina Faso’s path.

The Sankara Mausoleum’s inauguration is not just an act of remembrance—it’s a bold political statement, signalling the continuity of a revolutionary struggle the Burkinabe people, led by Traoré, vow to see through to victory.
