Togo advances energy transition with new 62 MW Solar plant in Sokodé

Togo has taken a major step forward in its renewable energy push with plans to build a 62 MWp solar power plant in Sokodé. The project, backed by a €26.5 million (17.4 billion CFA francs) investment from the African Development Bank (AfDB), is part of the country’s strategy to reach 200 MWp of solar capacity by 2030.

Awarded to French energy giant EDF and co-financed by Proparco, the initiative includes an 11 km transmission line and is expected to generate 87 GWh annually while cutting CO₂ emissions by 13,600 tons.

This aligns with President Faure Gnassingbé’s vision to expand access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy nationwide.

The Sokodé plant follows the recent launch of a similar solar facility in Dapaong, reinforcing Togo’s commitment to energy independence, sustainable development, and attracting international investment.

These projects mark a clear shift toward greener energy solutions, positioning Togo as a regional leader in renewable energy adoption.
