Togo: Host country of the first African Union conference on public debt

Since Monday, May 12, Lomé has been hosting a major event: the very first African Union (AU) conference dedicated to public debt. This continental gathering brings together policymakers, technical and financial partners, and various key stakeholders around a central issue for the continent’s economic future: the sustainable management of debt.

On the sidelines of this conference, President of the Togolese Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, received in audience Moses Vilakazi, AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, the Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment. The pan-African diplomat praised the choice of Togo as host of this first edition and expressed the African Union’s gratitude for the arrangements made by the Togolese authorities to ensure the smooth running of the event.

“The issue of debt is crucial for our countries. It directly impacts key areas such as education, health, and infrastructure. We wanted to thank the President of the Council and the Togolese people for their warm welcome and commitment”,emphasized Moses Vilakazi after the meeting.

This long-planned conference by the continental organization serves as a strategic platform for dialogue. Its goal is to promote more transparent and responsible public debt management across the continent, in a context of growing budgetary pressures.
