Mali: President Assimi Goïta receives AES finance ministers in Bamako

Malian Transitional President General Assimi Goïta hosted finance ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) on Friday, May 23, 2025, marking a pivotal step in the bloc’s push for collective economic independence. The high-level talks focused on innovative financial mechanisms to accelerate development across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Key discussions centered on establishing joint investment funds, harmonizing tax and customs policies, and pooling domestic resources measures designed to break dependence on foreign economic models.

“Our peoples demand self-determination through rigorous, results-driven governance,” stated President Goïta, praising ministers’ commitment to building a Pan-African financial architecture.

The Bamako meeting signals the AES’s evolution beyond a security alliance into an economic force.

Burkina Faso: Under President Ibrahim Traoré, public finances are becoming a tool for inclusive development, breaking with the enrichment of an elite

By strengthening public financing tools, the three nations aim to direct more resources toward agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure sectors critical to their 90 million citizens.
